the emacs binary shipped by apple with OSX is a terminal-only
application, but he has installed emacs via DarwinPorts, and
unless something went wrong, it should either:
1) have been compiled as an X11-aware application (default), or:
2) have been compiled as a carbon application, if the "carbon"
variant was chosen. In the second alternative he should have
gotten a standard .app living under /Applications/DarwinPorts.
The carbon variant needs to be explicitly invoked, however. The
fact that the full /opt/loca/lbin/emacs path was available
suggests the default alternative.
To answer the original post:
Perhaps something in the configure phase went wrong and the build
didn't pick the X11 libs?

The "Application" menu to the right of the "X11"
