Followup:
found and chown /tmp/.X11-unix to root.
x11 still fails to launch. It no longer warns about the ownership
issue, but the console still shows the issue with the font path:
XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
[DRI] screen 0 installation complete
Screen 0 added: 1440x900 @ (0,0)
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/,
removing from list
I went to that directory and found two files, "fonts.dir" and
"fonts.scale."
both owned by root and permissions set to 644.
Any ideas?

There is no X11.app. I did say it wasn't there, though I didn't say
where it wasn't, specifically. Also, releases of the GIMP since
about 2000 have all automatically launched X-11.
Finally, on my install disk, the option to install software does
not include X11 on the list. It is included if you select custom
install of the operating system.
I have another 10.4 install disk, but never thought to use the
installer package from it, since the one I downloaded from the
apple site didn't work (see my original post) even after 3 separate
downloads of it.
I ran the installer, and it actually did install (rather than say
it couldn't install). however, it won't launch.
The console shows this
XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
[DRI] screen 0 installation complete
Screen 0 added: 1440x900 @ (0,0)
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/,
removing from list!
I've of course searched for /tmp/.X11-unix so that I could change
ownership, but haven't found it. I'll run a script to correct
ownerships and see if that helps.
Thanks again.

First of all, as a reality check:
You are sure there is no /Applications/Utilities/X11.app? You
didn't explicitly say so. Perhaps you aren't aware that it needs
to be launched explicitly?

You definitely don't need to reinstall the OS.
Either:
1. Run "Optional Installs" on your Mac OS X Install DVD and
select X11, or
2. Run the X11 installer by itself: /System/Installation/Packages/
X11User.pkg

I have recently upgraded to a core-duo iMac. I used the included
software to move accounts and applications from my G4 laptop.
However, when I tried to launch the GIMP, I got an error that
X-11 was not found. In fact it was not there. However, when I
attempt to install X11 from the most recent download, I get the
error message that there is "already newer software" on my
computer, and X-11 won't install.
Anyone seen this before? What's the fix?
Do I have to re-install the system software (archive and
install) using the disk that came with the computer (this time
including X-11)?
TIA
