There is no X11.app. I did say it wasn't there, though I didn't say
where it wasn't, specifically. Also, releases of the GIMP since about
2000 have all automatically launched X-11.
Finally, on my install disk, the option to install software does not
include X11 on the list. It is included if you select custom install of
the operating system.
It would be useful if you filed a bug with Apple at
<http://bugreport.apple.com>, explaining your experience.
This is something that has tripped up countless unsuspecting users, and
it is simply a shame for Apple that they let this continue.
It is even worse for people who install the Xcode tools, because there
the development part of X11 is installed by default, so that everybody
then assumes they do have X11 installed when in fact they only have
about 5% of it installed.
I have another 10.4 install disk, but never thought to use the installer
package from it, since the one I downloaded from the apple site didn't
work (see my original post) even after 3 separate downloads of it.
I ran the installer, and it actually did install (rather than say it
couldn't install). however, it won't launch.
This is because the only X11 package that you can download from Apple is
for MacOSX 10.3, not for 10.4. It probably says so somewhere on the
download page, but not in such a way that anyone would notice; and in
any case, this is so crazy that many people don't want to believe it
even if they read it.
The console shows this
XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
[DRI] screen 0 installation complete
Screen 0 added: 1440x900 @ (0,0)
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing
from list!
I've of course searched for /tmp/.X11-unix so that I could change
ownership, but haven't found it. I'll run a script to correct ownerships
and see if that helps.
These startup messages are completely normal, everybody is getting them
and they don't explain why your X11 isn't starting, or perhaps rather
why it is quitting after it starts. There are dozens of different
reasons why this can happen, most of them related to your ~/.xinitrc
file if you have such a thing. A (slightly out-of-date) list of possible
reasons can be found at
<http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/trouble.php?phpLang=en#immedate-quit>
More information (equally out-of-date) can be found at
<http://homepage.mac.com/sao1/fink/index.html> and at
