I doubt you will be able to have acroread in an X
environment on a Mac. I don't have this on PPC. The
Acroread download manager is a finicky beast, but you may be
able to get the current latest version to run under Rosetta
(PPC emulation) if they don't yet do a native Intel version.
If you aren't using fink (http://fink.sourceforge.net), you
may find some clues about xpdf by looking at whether it is
working for Intel macs under their distribution...and if you
are, try posting the errors from the compile on one of their
mailing lists, there are more people who can help you there.
