anyone knows how avoid the OS automounting devices such as USB or FireWire

I know this question is *hugely* off-topic, but I was wondering where to ask
pretty well exactly the same question. My form of the question is:
How do I stop OSX modifying a USB storage device when I insert it? What
normally happens is that the device is auto mounted, the appropriate Finder
window pops up, and ... a .DS_store file is written to the root directory of
the device.
The writing of the .DS_store file can be stopped, I think,
not sure if a USB device comes under the heading of a
"network volume" though, so might require a little more
digging to get something like this to work -- from the

I'm curious though, how can you tell your clients not to
use/create .DS_Store files on network volumes? I didn't
find anything with a quick google and afp548 search...
Mentioned upthread:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktopservices
DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
