Yes it's possible and in many cases easy. OS X is BSD underneath and
can support X11 apps. Take a look at the following and write back if
you have specific questions:
The Fink project makes installing apps (from binary or source very
easy):

There's also the DarwinPorts project that has converted many open
source programs to run on OS X:
http://darwinports.opendarwin.org/
