If you are logging in and then manually exporting your display you're
trying to talk tcp between the hosts. Check for port 6000 listening
on the host you're attempting to connect to.
Is there a reason why you're not using ssh X11 tunneling? Try using
ssh -X (or -Y) and not manually setting the DISPLAY setting. This
will automatically set your display setting to transfer X data over
the ssh channel. I have even found that using ssh -XC can speed up X
over slow links.
I am not sure what would have changed between 10.4.2 and 10.4.3. I'm
sure you can access more information on that than I can.
