This "just works" for me.
X11.app is a fat executable which will run either Intel or PPC.
The X11 shared libs are also "fat" and can be loaded at runtime to either a
native Intel program or a PPC program running under Rosetta.
So if your x client program is built for PPC, it will run under Rosetta just
fine (a bit slow, but better than not running at all).
If your x client program is built for Intel, it will run natively just fine.
I'm impressed with how well this works.

Subject: ppc X11 unix binaries on Macintel
I am considering purchasing a Macintel machine for
our lab (which already has a number of powermacs). However
I have major concerns about the pain and suffering that will
occur when we try to run existing ppc x11 binaries on the
Macintel box under Rosetta.
I noticed a thread in this mailing list describing the
process to build Universal binaries on a Macintel machine.
However I haven't seen a detailed discussion on the process
for running existing ppc x11 binaries on a Macintel box.
Specifically, I would be interested to know if precompiled
software like Chimera and Sparky (with G4 compatible binaries)
will run on a Macintel box. These specific programs are available
from...
http://www.cgl.ucsf.edu/chimera/
http://www.cgl.ucsf.edu/home/sparky/
Since it has taken over five years for the available scientific
applications to reach their levels on ppc MacOS X, I am quite concerned
about the inability to run existing ppc X11 binaries on Macintel
and the likely long time frame before we reach the same level of
support in scientific applications again.
Jack
