What is the current state of the implementation of DPS in Apple X11 1.1?
I want to use DPS with ImageMagick [1] to process PS files since they
state "If Ghostscript is unavailable, the Display Postscript X11
extension is used to rasterize a Postscript document (assuming you
define HasDPS and DPS is available)." [2].
I spent some hard time trying to figure out how things work, please
correct me if I'm wrong.
Since I didn't find any information about DPS on Apple's Developer
website and X11 1.1 is based on XFree86 4.4.0, I checked the XFree86
documentation [3].
I read the "XFree86 and DPS" section [4] and learned that:
"As all X11 extensions, DPS consists of client-side and server-side
components. The DPS client side consists of a number of libraries and a
number of tools for programming and configuration. The DPS server side
may consist either of an X server extension, or of a client-side process
known as the ``DPS agent.'' In this latter case, the term
``server-side'' is somewhat misleading.
At the time of writing, only the client side is included with XFree86;
the server side must be obtained separately. Please see server side
[section] later in this document for more information."
And in the server side section:
"In order to use DPS clients, you need to install a DPS server side,
which can be either a server extension (a ``DPS/X extension''), or a
separate process (referred to, variously, either as a ``DPS/NX agent''
or, rather confusingly, as ``Client-Side DPS'' (CSDPS)."
After reading the above documentation I also understood what dpsinfo was
complaining about:
[localhsot:~] xfox% dpsinfo
%% DPS Client Library Warning:
Auto-launching DPS NX agent.
%% DPS Client Library Warning:
FAILED to auto-launch:
dpsnx.agent
dpsinfo: no DPS extension or agent found.
So, if a DPS/X extension or a DPS/NX agent is required to succesfully
use DPS on Apple's X11, where can I get one?
Is this really the right route, or am I missing something?
