Thanks, Martin!
Installing the [/Applications/Installers/xTools/Packages] X11SDK.pkg
addressed the issue and I am able to install the worker package.
I wish I could say that it also ran, but it is giving me a
"can't connect to X!" error.
Try running it like so:
DISPLAY=:0 worker
I'll be hitting the Fink FAQ to see if I can figure out why and
also to
resolve the warning about the C++ compiler.
Other responses to problem discussion are below if they are of
interest.

You mean "unstable", I suppose? At least that's where Fink's worker
package has been for the last 4 years. It may yet make it to
"stable" if
there is any positive user feedback.
Yes, I meant to say Worker is classified as "unstable" not
"experimental."
And yes, the Fink package has been around for a number of years, but
Worker was just updated and I got inspired to try again. If your

definitely be

and has dependencies that force the install
of one of the Darwin compatible x11 systems:
No Fink package forces the installation of xfree86 or xorg *if*
you have
a complete version of Apple's X11 installed. Complete means both
packages from your system disk, X11User.pkg and X11SDK.pkg.
(...and force was probably the wrong word again, since I had to
approve
all the installation steps...)
Installing the X11SDK addressed the issue.
fink needs help picking an alternative to satisfy a virtual
dependency. The candidates:
(1) xfree86: Free X11 implementation for Darwin and Mac OS X
(2) xorg: Free X11 implementation for Darwin and Mac OS X
This happens only if your X111 installation is incomplete.
Got it!
My OSeX 3.9 system is set up with the stock Apple X11 package
from the
Panther install DVD. I made the mistake one time of allowing Fink to
install
the xfree86 as a package dependency and it hosed my entire X11
config.
I don't think there was ever a Fink xfree86 package that was able
to do
this. It will build and then refuse to install when it detects
that you
already have something in /usr/X11R6.
My recollection is that there was a 'replace' or 'overwrite'
option. In any
case, I made all the wrong user choices and rendered my existing X11
unusable.
I had to erase and re-install my entire X11 system to get it
working again, since I didn't know where to look for the problems.
The Fink mailing lists and the Fink web site, in particular the FAQ,
would be good starting points.
It was simply more expedient to re-install the Apple x11 and the
dozen of so
stable binaries that I run.
So the big question becomes:
Is there a way to (safely and easily!) have BOTH the Apple
X11 and
the Darwin Xorg installed and functionling on my Macs?
No. You can mix some of the functionalities, like using Apple's
quartz-wm with xorg, but the bulk of the X11 code sits in /usr/
X11R6 and
has to be installed either from Apple or from xfree86 or from xorg.
[snip] since Apple has disappointingly decided to drop support
of the
xDarwin project.)
I don't know what you mean by this, what did they drop?
Word from a couple of knowledgable peers was that Apple had announced
intentions to discontinue xDarwin support, though I haven't been
able to dig
up specifics on this or Apples current support policies regarding X11
(xDarwin) and OSS development in general.
Would welcome any reference documentation if the opinion is in error.
Apple made one huge mistake with X11 that is making the life of many
users (like you) miserable: They decided to split 5% of the X11
code off
into a separate package that is installed with the developer
tools, but
is absolutely necessary if you want to compile anything using X11. In
addition they decided to make the X11User package an optional install
which is off by default. These are sad errors of judgment that, for
ideological reasons, are not likely to be corrected.
Thanks for the clarification. I better understand the environment now.
