The launchd approach turns a two-step process into a one-step process.
It also *vastly* simplifies things for people trying to wrap X11 apps
for use in OS X. It doesn't rule out the two-step process at all, so
you're free to launch X11.app by hand if you find the current approach
problematic. Change the initial xterm to xlsfonts if you don't like
having to close that window every time.
