Agreed, but ideally the X applications would have entries in the Dock,
rather than a monolithic X icon for all running programs. See for
example how VMWare creates entries for each program running in Unity
mode.

Exactly - I don't have any experience with those APIs either but I may
give this a shot once my 'real' work calms down a bit, though if
someone more knowledgeable beats me to the punch that's okay too =)
