greetings, all.
I subscribed to the list solely to address the subject-line issue.
I am a recent upgrader to Leopard. So far I use only one X11
application, the excellent OpenOffice 2.3.org. Thanks to to Mr. Byer's
excellent work with the Xquartz upgrades and the easy to follow
instructions at www.x.org/wiki/XDarwin, I have been able upgrade the
Leopard X11 to the point where OpenOffice runs almost as smoothly as it
did under Tiger.
I say almost because if one opens the OpenOffice app before launching
X11 manually, it hunts around forever it seems and then presents a
message box advising "Command timed out". Clear the message box and OOo
starts and runs beautifully.
Opening X11 first by clicking the X11.app icon in
/Applications/Utilities gets rid of the above obnoxious behaviour.
Indeed, I have even gone so far as to add that X11.app to my Login Items
at System Preferences > Accounts, so I have X11 humming along in the
background at boot. To get even fancier, an examination of the
OpenOffice.org 2.3.app package allowed me to locate the main executables
for the text editor, spreadsheet, and presentation sub-applications, and
I have been able to add their paths to the X11 Applications menu. Really
cool, and I am impressed by my cleverness.
However, I am positively beside myself trying to figure out how to get
rid of the launching of xterm by default when one starts X11.app. I
understand that under Tiger and before it was a simple matter of editing
/etc/X11/xinit/.xinitrc, or something like that, but I can find nothing
of the sort on Leopard. And trying to launch the copy of X11.app in
/usr/X11 leads to all manner of weirdness with two or more copies of the
X11 icon bouncing around in the dock, etc.
I like my "launch X11 at login" workaround, but it would be really
elegant and pretty if I could avoid seeing the xterm window plunk itself
in the upper left corner of my screen.
Any ideas how to suppress it?
Sorry if this is too much of a newbie issue for this list. If there is
an answer in an archive or FAQ I haven't seen, please direct me.
Finally, I am really grateful for the work of Mr. Byer and colleagues to
get the X11 stuff ironed out. I was really disappointed when I found my
beloved OOo suite worked so sluggishly on Leopard. With the Xquartz
rebuilds, it now is pleasure to use.
Les
