Ah, I missed that ":9" detail. That made it so I could actually log
in! First time on Leopard...
But I encounter the following errors logging in:
1) A gnome dialog window pops up that reads:
--------------------
Error activating XKB configuration.
It can happen under various circumstances:
- a bug in libxklavier library
- a bug in X server (xkbcom, xmodmap utilities)
- X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation
X server version data:
The X.Org Foundation
70200000
If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The results of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The results of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
-----------------
Note that this error dialog appears to show up because to get the
keyboard to work at all via XDMCP from a mac to a linux server, I had
to implement the keyboard layout workaround that I found here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2539412&postcount=4 the
important part of which is quoted here:
"I launched gconf-editor, navigated to
"/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd" and added an invalid layout
to the "layouts" key, I made sure that it was the only layout in the
list. Now gnome starts smoothly..."
I tested creating a new account on the linux server without an invalid
keyboard layout and logged into it to see if the keyboard situation
had been fixed. It hadn't. I couldn't type and get any of the
(american english) characters I expected.
2) In the terminal I launched Xephyr from, I get:
Check-in failed: Permission denied
Extended Input Devices not yet supported. Impelement it at line 625 in kinput.c
3) I can't copy and paste between the Xephyr window and OS X. At all.
I don't remember whether this worked or not before with XDMCP, but it
was annoying to have to type out the entire error from #1 by hand.
So, in summary, it looks that using Xephyr I get pretty close to what
I was able to do in Tiger. Thanks!
