Even if the majority of users required Mode Switch (assuming it's
the same as AltGr), the left Alt isn't the right place for it. A
look at "Keyboard layout" on Wikipedia reveals several layout
diagrams. They don't mention Mode Switch... but many have AltGr.
However, the AltGr is on the right side. Hence, if these are the
same keys, the appropriate mapping is for the right Alt key, not
the left.
Mac keyboards never had an AltGr key. Mapping it to a key where it
would be logical on a PC-version of a particular keyboard is not
really helpful. And fwiw, my automatisms are to use the left alt key
most of the time to type "special" characters (such as ~ and |).
