Since I'm not on Leopard, I don't know how valid what I write is.
But unless something strange happens, we theoretically could
do the xmodmap trick in reverse, mapping an unused key to
Alt_L.
The real problem, as I see it, is the lack of an enough number
of unused / modifier keys on most Mac keyboards =(
