Actually, I'm sorry. I was trying not very successfully to highlight
the issue of all the different emacs available on OSX, and the fact
that it's hard to get them all to use the same key mappings. This has
never been an issue for me on other platforms to the degree it has
been for me on OSX.

Yep, (b) is what I meant

I normally run remote emacs in terminal mode, within screen, on a
*local* xterm, because xterm has, so far, been the only terminal in
OSX that I've been able to make work (key mapping wise) just like the
other platforms (Linux, Solaris) I use. And besides, I really value
screen's ability to attach and detach terminals.

So I just tried this on the consoles (outside of X11) on both a Fedora
and a Debian machine. Both machine's PC Alt keys worked for Meta in
emacs. I can't ever remember having had to configure this to be so,
but it's possible I had way back when.

Yes, I forgot to mention that my fingers demand Alt keys immediately
on the left and right of the spacebar. I keep forgetting that the
Mac's ALt isn't there (I'm relatively new to Macs.) It's really
important to me that I don't have to switch key mappings depending on
which machine I'm using.
