2.3.0 is not "depressingly far in the future" ... it's probably about
2 months away. 2.2.1 is already in rc... I have heard of no
regressions yet... I just want to figure out one more lockup and
address a spaces issue with modal windows before I push it out.
There is just one known issue in the 1.4 server which I need to figure
out before we can move to the 1.4 server in 2.3.0 (if I figure it out
soon, we may even skip 2.2.1)
RandR support will not address this issue, however.

Yes, the problem is still in 10.5.2 + 2.2.0.1

Hey, all,
For the last few revisions of the OS, I've had a problem with
external monitors and X11 -- I run X11 on a MacBook Pro with a
1600x1200 external monitor attached. If I attach the external
monitor (which gets the menu bar when attached) then X11 ignores
all keystrokes and mouse clicks when the cursor outside the area of
the laptop's built-in monitor (as displaced to the large external
monitor). This means, for example, that if I am drawing with GIMP
or Inkscape, I can't make a mark outside the upper-left two thirds
of my external monitor. Likewise, long menu bars and large windows
thoroughly confuse X11. The workaround is to restart X11 (and
therefore ditch all my open windows) every time I plug in the
monitor.
Do others have this problem? I've filed bug reports with Apple,
but that is about as effective as shouting down a deep hole.
