Maybe I'm wrong but wouldn't you end up with 3 icons in dock and 3
X11.app for a total of 6 app running?
What would the advantage in this compared to having 3+1 apps? I'm
talking about packages like Gimp.app and Inkscape.app for example.
IMHO what should be focused is a standard wrapper interface between a
process using X11 and a Cocoa app.
Actually when I run Gimp.app to bring it up I have to command-tab to
X11.app, it'd be nice if those wrappers could do the job binding to a
specific process, this way you could have a single X11.app (eventually
hidden from dock, say like the old Classic prefpane) and several
application behaving more like Cocoa application.
The idea is to have each one show up in the command+tab list etc. Currently I
use command+tab to switch to X11.app, and then I have to use command+~ to find
the correct X window. This is a bit of a pain right now because at any given
time I'm likely to have 3 or 4 xterms open with vim, 1 xterm open with alpine
and 3 or 4 random other windows for various X apps.
I'm not really worried about how it is done, but it would be very nice if I
could group the X windows allowing me to get to one paticular group by using
command+tab to select it, and then command+~ to select windows within that
group.
Obviously this isn't an urgent thing. X does work very nicely on OS X, and I am
very very happy with it. I'd just like a bit nicer integration with OS X, and
this would go a long way towards doing that.
