Hmm... For fun, I just downloaded Gimp 2.6.3 (Intel build) from
your link and I am still seeing it (I've run it from the dmg so as
to minimize any cross-talk with my macports installation). It's
quite noticeable when I'm moving the cursor quickly in circles.
And sorry, Jeremy... I don't use the GIMP frequently enough to
pinpoint when it happened. If you like, I could try reverting to
older releases of XQuartz to see, but it would have to wait until
the weekend.
If you could do that, it would help.
be careful though... some of the .pkgs seem to have a bug in
installation which prevents downgrading. You might want to sanitize
your system before you install a downgrade with:
sudo rm -rf /usr/X11* /System/Library/Launch*/org.x.*
/Applications/Utilities/X11.app
sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.X11DocumentationLeo
sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.X11User
sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.X11SDKLeo
sudo pkgutil --forget org.x.X11.pkg
BTW, just wanted to pass my thanks on for all the great work on
this project.
Thanks. I'm really excited about 2.3.2! I'm building 2.3.2_rc4 right
now, and if things go well, we'll have a final release soon =)
Unfortunately, unless I get more info about this gimp issue, it's
likely not going to get fixed until after 2.3.2.
I noticed a difference between the Gimp in Ubuntu and the X11 Gimp in
OS X. If I run ipcs to see what shared memory segments are in use,
before and after I get this sort of diff output in Ubuntu:
+0x00000000 69959686 george 600 393216 2 dest
+0x00000000 69992455 george 600 393216 2 dest
+0x00000000 70025224 george 600 16384 2 dest
The Mac X11 version of the Gimp doesn't seem to use the MIT-SHM/XShm
extension at all. Nothing is listed by ipcs when the X11 Gimp runs on
the Mac.
Is MIT-SHM available and working? It's listed by xdpyinfo, but
perhaps it's not fully working, or some Gimp packages have built
Gtk+/Gimp without MIT-SHM support.
I have a test case I will try in a bit on the Mac. This lack of
shared memory could account for the slowness, because otherwise it's
using XPutImage.
