Apparently, the "Throttling respawn" message indicates a problem that
you can fix by running "sudo update_prebinding -force -root /" and
rebooting. (This from a bit of googling, plus I tried it on a
friend's machine once and it worked as advertised there.)

Only wm_ffm=1 is relevant here. ffm stands for focus follows mouse,
and when it is set, the focus does indeed follow the mouse so long as
X11 is in the foreground. But only for X11 windows: It's as if the
windows from other apps weren't there. In fact, if you move the mouse
off the top X11 windows onto the window of a different app, and there
is no X11 window below the mouse, the focus stays with the first X11
window.
