Hmm ... the only two OSX apps that I have open 24/7 are X11 and Safari
(okay, so I'm a low-tech kinda guy). I do not recall having seen Safari
drop focus like this. It seems likely that I'd have been using Safari
at least once at the critical moments, but I can't swear to it.

g42:~ tgl$ ls /Library/LaunchAgents
com.hp.launchurlagent.plist
g42:~ tgl$ ls ~/Library/LaunchAgents
ls: /Users/tgl/Library/LaunchAgents: No such file or directory
com.hp.launchurlagent.plist seems to be part of HP's Photo and Imaging
Software bundle (carried forward from 10.4, not part of 10.5 install).
A quick look into it finds
<key>TimeOut</key>
<integer>15</integer>
which doesn't seem promising to explain a 1-hour cycle. But I wonder
whether the other respondents are using HP printer or scanner software.
