OK, so it turns out I'm not a good candidate to test your fix. I
started changing org.x.X11.plist and then realized I should first test
whether my broken .bashrc still breaks X11. So I put back the 'set
noclobber' in bashrc and found that X11 was still happy to launch from
new Terminal windows.
Even after a reboot. My .bashrc is definitely reverted to what I was
certain was a bad version, and org.x.X11.plist is the standard,
unmodified version, and now X11 launches just as it should.
And just as definitely, removing 'set noclobber' in 2.1.2 and 2.1.3
fixed this failure-to-laucnh thing.
Argh!

True. I was just hoping you'd confirm this solves the problem with
broken startup scripts. It should, but I haven't tested it yet.

Thanks! But I'm happy enough just to remove an unwanted (and
clearly inappropriate anyway) line from my .bashrc.

Tim, if you edit /System/Library/LaunchAgents/org.x.X11.plist to
have:
<key>ProgramArguments</key>
<array>
<string>/bin/bash</string>
<string>--login</string>
<string>-c</string>
<string>/usr/X11/bin/startx</string>
</array>
instead of the block that is there, it should work (you may need
to reboot) for you with that startup script.

I had exactly the same situation you show in your system log and
traced it back to having 'set noclobber' in my .bashrc (which I
have soft-linked to .bash_profile in a probably futile attempt to
minimize the number of distinct startup scripts.) This only
started being a problem with the more recent Xquartz releases (I
think it started with 2.1.3). I am fairly sure that any such
'incompatible' startup-script commands will lead to the pattern
of behaviour you see. Once I removed the 'set noclobber'
everything works fine.

Hello,
I recently obtained X11 2.1.4 from a Mac OS X software update.
With this upgrade, I can no longer launch X11. When I try to
launch the console by opening X11.app, the app flashes briefly
on the dock then disappears. The full output from the console
is below. I have tried repairing permissions and reinstalling
2.1.4, but the problem persists.
Some details that may have some bearing on this problem:
1. In the past, I did not run X11 from the standard location
with no problems. When I updated from OS 10.4 to 10.5, all my
applications were migrated over, so I continued to run X11 from
the nonstandard location with no problems.
2. I have used the xterminator application to change some of the
behavior of X11 in the past. However, this application seems to
be incompatible with the latest version of X11 and/or OS X.
When I try to apply changes using the application, X11 does its
usual dock pop and disappear, then the system preferences open.
Any help restoring the functionality of my X11 terminal would be
greatly appreciated. I'm sorry I'm not more knowledgeable and
so can't provide better information. If there is anything that
could help to diagnose this problem, just let me know.
Thanks very much,
Adrian
