Well, if you personalize anything inside /usr/X11, any subsequent
SoftwareUpdate or installation of a new Xquartz update may clobber
your effort without questions asked and without much documentation.
The Fink flavor of clobbering has at least the advantage of asking
permission, documenting what it does, and backing your personalized
version of xinitrc up instead of simply overwriting it.
The xinitrc that I customized is in the home (~) directory. I don't
typically go fiddling with files in /usr manually, only via program
supplied interfaces (i.e., if they save preferences or what have you
in that directory or its subs by default).
