Dear Jeremy, Martin and Harald,

finally I got it to work:

I did:
sudo rm -rf /usr/X11 /usr/X11R6
sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.X11DocumentationLeo
sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.X11User
sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.X11SDKLeo
sudo pkgutil --forget org.x.X11.pkg

Installed X11User.pkg from Leopard's DVD - /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/Optional Install/Optional Installs.mpkg
Installed X11SDK.pkg from Leopard's DVD - /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/Optional Installs/Xcode Tools/Packages/
Installed updated X11 2.1.1 from xquartz.macosforge.org

And started to install Scribus with MacPorts... all compiled well and even runs!
Cheers, guys!

Request: Please put this into a FAQ - How to start over your X11 environment.
Is SAO of Apple's X11 and Leopard FAQs on macosxhints Forums reading in?

On the other hand it is so trivial,
and I believe I simply forgot to re-install X11SDK the first time around...

Greetings,
Thorsten.

What other X11 versions have you tried? Like X11-tiger?
I don't know 100% that this would solve the problem, but I suspect doing this would work:
rm -rf /usr/X11 /usr/X11R6
Install X11User.pkg from Leopard's DVD (I think it's in Optional Installs.mpkg or something similar)
Install X11SDK.pkg from X-Code
Install the update from xquartz.macosforge.org (2.1.1 or 2.1.2 which should be out soon)

Before you reinstall these packages, it is a good idea to run

 sudo --forget com.apple.pkg.X11DocumentationLeo
 sudo --forget com.apple.pkg.X11User
 sudo --forget com.apple.pkg.X11SDKLeo
 sudo --forget org.x.X11.pkg

This gives the Apple installer less excuses to forget to install certain files, as it has been known to do.
