You are addressing the wrong public here. It is of course possible
to hand-craft auto-tools to do anything you want. The fact is,
however, that until now the standard way to detect an X11
installation uses xmkmf, and fails if xmkmf is not present.
This means that mere users - not package creators - are left out in
the cold if they want to do the usual configure; make; make install
procedure for software that they can download *now*.
I wasn't aware that "mere users" actually built software themselves
these days, but in any case, this debate is as dead as xmkmf. No one
in the community has shown any inclination to put it on life support
and update the relevant Darwin configuration files for it, nor is it
somehow Apple's responsibility to do so (we have enough work ahead
without also looking in the rear-view mirror), so it's basically dead
dead dead and it's not coming back, that is unless you're personally
volunteering to bring it all up to date and maintain it for the
foreseeable future (were this to happen, I would honestly consider
adding it to some sort of legacy support package). If you're not,
then please let the thread die. Thanks.
