You are addressing the wrong public here. It is of course possible to
hand-craft auto-tools to do anything you want. The fact is, however,
that until now the standard way to detect an X11 installation uses
xmkmf, and fails if xmkmf is not present.
This means that mere users - not package creators - are left out in
the cold if they want to do the usual configure; make; make install
procedure for software that they can download *now*.
I wasn't aware that "mere users" actually built software themselves
these days, but in any case, this debate is as dead as xmkmf. No one
I know you are not reachable by rational argument; if I forget it, I
just have to run "ls -l /usr/lib/libreadline.dylib" ;-)
But you can't stop this discussion as long as people are hurt by your
decisions.
in the community has shown any inclination to put it on life support and
update the relevant Darwin configuration files for it, nor is it somehow
Apple's responsibility to do so (we have enough work ahead without also
looking in the rear-view mirror), so it's basically dead dead dead and
it's not coming back, that is unless you're personally volunteering to
bring it all up to date and maintain it for the foreseeable future (were
this to happen, I would honestly consider adding it to some sort of
legacy support package). If you're not, then please let the thread
die. Thanks.
Nobody asks you to upgrade anything. Just continue shipping the xmkmf
you are currently shipping with Mac OS X Leopard.
If you want to fix anything in X11 on Leopard, please fix the stupid
typo in /usr/X11/lib/libXrandr.la that breaks gnu libtool-based software
that uses -lXrandr. (In case you forgot, the libXrandr.la file shipped
with 10.5.2 lists a library name that does not exist in the X11 shipped
with 10.5.2).
