The reason the argument is not dead is that, despite claims to the
contrary upthread, autoconf scripts WILL NOT WORK without xmkmf on
current Apple systems. I just experimented with this and found out

Besides the bug you are describing, there are at least two others I have
seen that may prevent configure from finding X11 when xmkmf is not
present. One of them, present in quite a few gnome packages, is a simple
syntax error. But while fixing these bugs is important (and some of
them, AFAIK even the one with the missing dylib extension you are
describing, are already fixed in the latest autotools versions), this is
beside the point. It does not help users who want to compile currently
existing software, and it will take a long time, maybe years, until
these bug fixes propagate to really existing configure scripts. Until
this happens, users of the latest X11 on the Mac are simply screwed.
