I really just want some generic understanding of what might be
involved to get X11 on the iPhone not any detailed information.
Here's a generic answer then: If you have to ask, it would be too
hard. :-)
OK, that's a bit harsh, I'll grant you, but seriously - I've done
ports of the X11 server to new hardware before and it's by no means an
easy task, particularly when your target is an embedded/low memory
platform - there are a lot of low-level details that have to be gotten
exactly right, and if it were easy then I suspect X11 would also work
a lot better than it currently does on the Mac, a platform with
nowhere near the same constraints.
I've little doubt that some pretty serious coders out there have
already begun the task of figuring out how to port everything from
MAME to X11 to the platform, and they're not asking the question
because they already have a pretty good idea of what's involved.
Of course, I have to seriously wonder WHY anyone would want X on their
phone, but perhaps "just because" is a reasonable enough answer to
that question. I've seen sillier projects undertaken for less
justification. In your shoes, I suspect the best thing to do is
simply wait for someone else to do it.
