Got it!
It seems that textedit had appended a hidden .txt onto my gtkrc-2.0
file (I thought I had removed the extension, but textedit stuck it
back on). Anyhow when I renamed the file without the extension, it
worked like a charm.
It was the ls -lu .gtkrc-2.0 command that did the trick since it
couldn't find the file. When I did an ls -a there was the
problem-- .gtkrc-2.0.txt
Thanks for all the help everyone!
Cheers,

okay,
I used textedit and made the .gtkrc-2.0 file with the only line
being: gtk-font-name = "geneva 12". Saved it as plain text in my
home directory.
Unfortunately I don't see any difference at all when I launch
gnucash. Any ideas?
You could check if the program even accesses the file. This is most
easily done by running this in a terminal:
ls -lu .gtkrc-2.0
It shows the last access time with a resolution of one minute, so make
sure to wait at least a minute since the last access time before
running gnucash, then check it again.
For a bigger sledgehammer, run this in a terminal window:
sudo filebyproc.d | grep -i gnucash
Then once that is running, start gnucash again. You should get a list
of all the files it tried to open in the terminal window. Hit
Control-C in the terminal to stop the listing. This should reveal the
location of any configuration file it tries to open. It will also list
all the libraries it uses, so the list can be long-ish.
