Ok, that's correct.
So what happens when you just run 'xterm' from Terminal.app?
What about if you start X11 from its icon (or running 'open -a X11' from
a bash prompt)?
I do have a .profile defined, linked to .bashrc via a symbolic link.
iTerm and Terminal both hang when trying to source the .profile (or
maybe .bashrc) and do not resume until I issue a Control-C to kill the
offending process.
This seems like a pretty bad problem to me. You should really figure
out what process is hanging, looping, or otherwise stalling your profile
from being sourced. You might want to check the output of 'ps x' while
this is happening to see the offender.
