Dear Jeremy:
I cannot launch X11 at all. I am at home now, so I will test your other
suggestions tomorrow. I was warned of trouble with 10.5, so I cloned my
10.4.11 installation to an external HD and reformatted the boot drive (I
have 2 drives on the G5, one with 10.4.11 (a basic installation with
only IDL 6.4 and Kaleidagraph 4.04 (both stable apps I've used for
years) and the apps installed from the 10.5 DVD.) I then installed the
10.5 base system, updated to 10.5.4, installed Retrospect (the backup
utility), IDL 6.4, updateed IDL 6.4 to 6.4.2, and copied my .profile
from the external HD. Later, I ugraded to IDL 7. Everything was fine
until the 10.5.5 update this AM, which was done the normal way through
Software Update. I even updated iTunes and installed the latest security
updates.

I have installed the Xquartz-2.3.1. I got to 10.5.5 by installing
10.5.0 from DVD, then using Software update to get to 1) 10.5.4 then
2) 10.5.5 this AM. What worked before no longer works. I do not set
the DISPLAY variable. It is currently set to /tmp/launch-CmrQkT/:0.
Ok, that's correct.
So what happens when you just run 'xterm' from Terminal.app?
What about if you start X11 from its icon (or running 'open -a X11'
from a bash prompt)?
I do have a .profile defined, linked to .bashrc via a symbolic link.
iTerm and Terminal both hang when trying to source the .profile (or
maybe .bashrc) and do not resume until I issue a Control-C to kill
the offending process.
This seems like a pretty bad problem to me. You should really figure
out what process is hanging, looping, or otherwise stalling your
profile from being sourced. You might want to check the output of 'ps
x' while this is happening to see the offender.
