What's your DISPLAY variable set to? In Leopard it needs to be of the
form /tmp/launch-xxxxxx/:0 otherwise X will have problems starting, I
imagine that if you updated from Tiger and copied your .profile over
the DISPLAY variable is being set to something like :0

If this is the case check your startup scripts and remove anything
that sets the DISPLAY variable.
