IMO this is somewhat of a problem.

If you DONT want a scroll wheel (as I dont ... it's just annoying) then the best I've found is the old Logitec 3 button mouse (also available as oem part from others). It's a great mouse, and its very cheap.
Ths big drawbacks - it's not USB (but a usb to PS2 adapter is also cheap) and it's not optical - so you'll need to keep your cleaning skills (but your choice of mousepad can help here).
Not sure it's still available though - if not, I'd look in junk shops etc.

Having decided to undergo Retail Therapy, I'm in the market for a three (Count 'Em: 3!) button mouse. Can you recommend a specific model?

Of course I want one that works well with Apple's X11, but I also need it to work well with whatever X11 Debian Linux is using these days.

I want a wired (not wireless) USB mouse. I don't have much experience with optical mice, which is one reason I'm asking you here - but I do know for sure that I'm real tired of scraping the toejam off my mechanical mouse's wheels!

I don't really need a scroll wheel, but if it has one I'd want it to double as the middle button.

Extra credit if I can buy it from a brick-and-mortar store in The Valley. My favorites are Micro Center and Central Computers:

In a pinch I'll even shop at Fry's:

... but only when Micro Center or Central Computers don't carry what I want. :-D

(You're welcome to recommend other shops.)

While price is a consideration, I believe quite strongly in investing in high-quality equipment that will be of lasting value. So if I can't afford the mouse you recommend, I'll save up my ducats until I can.

Thank You For Bestowing Your Kind Wisdom Upon Yours Truly.

Software isn't the only thing that should be free:
Music should be too, as it once was.
