Turned out it just required a system reboot. I thought this was not necessary anymore since the X11 installer said nothing.
Anyway, now Gnome runs but the keyboard is completely scrambled. Changing the layout using the Gnome system utilities from the GUI is of no use, so the problem seems to be more deep.
Any ideas?
