I tried to run X11 with startx. This produced some output in the terminal and everything seemed OK except one thing:
(EE) XKB: Couldn't open rules file /usr/X11/share/X11/xkb/rules/base
In my case, the path terminates at /usr/X11/share/X11/; the xkb directory does not exist at all. Is that normal? Could this be the reason that gnome does not run in this machine?
