While I agree it is not an X11 issue per se, I think it may
be possible to do something about it within the X11 package.
My evidence for this is from running the old fink xorg
version of X11 (XDarwin), where this did not happen, whereas
it did when running the apple X11 of the same vintage.
My hypothesis (I have no developer knowledge to support
this) is that the "focus stealing" is a feature of MAC OS X,
but that individual apps get to decide "how interuptible"
they are. A bit like you can trap ^C or SIGHUP in unix
apps, and decide what to do if you get one. Or like
clipboard and pasteboard ownership have to dance around
between apps depending on what the user does.
Actually, the old fink xorg wasn't completely immune: if you
triggered "logout" then the countdown to logout window would
"steal focus". But that's about the only thing that could
to interupt it.
So if you can find out how this stuff works, you might be
able to interupt-proof X11. I can't believe the fink xorg
was interupt-proof by accident...but even if it was, the
code is still around for comparison.
