I guess this has to do with the fact that Mathematica fonts are not
installed on my local mac. Since I'm quite new to X11 can anyone
advise me on the best way to install these fonts?

i suggest you install a demo version of Mathematica on your mac, or
else the Notebook reader.
Installing either will get the Mathematica fonts installed.
