That sounds like your X11.app is running in full screen mode, and with
the "focus on new windows" preference unchecked; the grey background
(and you may also notice a thick "X" cursor is the default X11
background. Option-Command-A should switch back to normal mode, then
you can edit the preferences to make sure it starts in normal mode in
the future.
