Um, no offense, Jeremy, but that's a bit strong. I agree that xemacs is
being too smart for its own good (that was always the case with xemacs),
but if any party is doing something they shouldn't, it's Apple -- they
should have introduced a new protocol tag when they decided to deploy
their launchd change to X11 startup on a POSIX-compliant system. For 20
years, X11 programs running on UNIX systems have been depending on the
standard syntax for the value of DISPLAY, and parsing that value in
order to properly connect to the server. It will probably take a few
more years for the X11 community to adapt to this new Apple convention.
By the way, has anyone added this launchd convention for DISPLAY syntax
to the X11 documentation? Probably be handy to have it documented, just
like the exceptional DECnet syntax. I took a look, but I'm not sure I
found the appropriate files.
