Um, no offense, Jeremy, but that's a bit strong. I agree that
xemacs is
being too smart for its own good (that was always the case with
xemacs),
but if any party is doing something they shouldn't, it's Apple -- they
should have introduced a new protocol tag when they decided to deploy
their launchd change to X11 startup on a POSIX-compliant system.

Sorry, but I have to agree with Jeremy; no program should be parsing
$DISPLAY itself because there is no way for it to know if a new
protocol has been added to the X server --- whether a connection
protocol or a magic "screen" value (say, to control an enhancement to
Xinerama) or something else. And arguably $DISPLAY should have
supported a pointer to a non-default AF_UNIX socket from the beginning
(one obvious use case would be ssh's X11 session forwarding, which
currently has to search for unused local display numbers).
