It looks to me like something's messed up with your login shell
environment. Are you *SURE* you don't have something in ~/.login or /
etc/csh.login that starts X11? That is the only thing diffrent
between executing X11 and X11.bin...

Hi Jeremy,
Thank you.
Moving the .tcshrc file out of the way did not do anything obvious
and I could not launch X11.
Following your suggestion, I did manage to start X11 2.4.0 from /
Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11.bin from a
terminal shell.
(but NOT from /Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11;
again no messages are returned in the console for the latter).
Here are the messages I get:

Dear Jeremy,
I just realized the systems log-file I pasted in must have been
from corresponding to X11 launched from the new user account.
When I try to launch X11 from my user account nothing comes up at
all in the systems log or console.app log. As I mentioned, this
seems to happen with any X11 after version 2.3.1.
Any thoughts on this?
my guess is that you have something in your ~/.tschrc or ~/.login
that uses X11. That's preventing X11 from starting. Try moving
aside ~/.cshrc, ~/.login, and ~/.tcshrc ...
If nothing comes up in the system log, then X11.bin isn't even
running. There should always be something printed when you start
X11. One of the first things in main() is:
fprintf(stderr, "X11.app: main(): argc=%d\n", argc);
so if nothing is printed to the system log, then something is very
wrong. Please recheck your log.
If you still can't find something, run it from Terminal.app by
executing:
/Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11
if that doesn't work, run:
/Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11.bin
