Thank you, interesting response. THe hosts file IIRC is, I gather, /
etc/hosts. (WHAT does IIRC stand for?) It is identical on the
desktop machine on which I have problems and an older MacBook Pro,
with an older xemacs, where I have no problems. And it also tells me
not to change the entry for localhost:
##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
so what kind of change are you recommending?
By the way, concerning John Allison's later post about not picking up
the DNS -- this shouldn't be an issue since this is a local
connection, and in any case domain names of external hosts seem to be
resolved just fine.
Thanks,
Ron

First, does anyone out there have a successfully running current
version of xemacs (21.4.22), on OS X 10.5 or 10.6, installed from

Yes. MacPorts+Snow Leopard and another machine with Leopard+Fink. No
issues.
I have installed xemacs from both macports and from fink (the
latter is 21.4.20) on my new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and
also the macports one on a desktop G5 running Leopard. In all of
these cases the startup of the initial xemacs window is
excruciatingly slow, several minutes.
I had a problem similar to this years ago on a linux box, it was
something to do with the emacs not being able to resolve the host
name of my computer. Once the host name was fixed (by sticking it in
the hosts file IIRC) the problem went away. I don't know if this is
the same issue you're having.
