I am puzzled as to where the /opt/local/lib version of the X11

X11 from the xquartz site since updating to 10.6.3, and I did
not (at least, knowingly) build it vs macports.
/usr/X11 is where Apple installs to.
/opt/X11 is where XQuartz.macosforge.org installs to.
/opt/local is where MacPorts installs to by default.
You have installed xorg-libX11 from MacPorts.
Does macports build X11 even if there is a /usr/X11R6/lib
one available?
Yes. MacPorts prefers its own versions of libraries by MP policy.
I'm disconcerted to find an /opt/local/lib X11 there.
Why? If it's there, it's because you've installed something in
MacPorts that needs it.
I found it by accident building some software (which is defaulting to
i386) and for some reason it found the /opt X11 (pure x86_64) one
instead
of the /usr/X11R6 one, so it failed to link...
I assume by "/opt X11" you mean "/opt/local" ...
Run 'sudo port -v uninstall xorg-libX11' to see what is depending on
it (you will not be allowed to uninstall it because of dependencies).
