Missing or corrupt app-defaults file?
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm*
Or a corrupt environment? What is the output of the following?
printenv | grep FILESEARCHPATH
Come to think of it, do you have a lot of stuff in your X resources?
What is the output of this? xrdb -q
