That's why I asked about the control-rightbutton menu; certain kinds of font
screwups (font metrics screwups in particular; and some of them only show if
you enable use of double-wide characters) only show if you move around in a
line, whereas "less" often doesn't need anything other than \r to work
unless you scroll backwards or etc.
xterm is a beast with lots of oddly interacting behaviors related to fonts.
For that matter, would be interesting to see "xprop -root RESOURCE_MANAGER"
output to spot anything else interesting going on, for example trying to use
xft fonts (a completely separate mechanism from the normal one and prone to
its own oddnesses).
