The X protocol error messages will usually appear on stderr of the client. I say usually because the error handler can be overwritten by the client, so they may log it elsewhere (maybe ask in XyVision's forums).

On the mac side, it's already there. /opt/X11/bin/xscope if you're on SL or /usr/X11/bin/xscope if you're on Leopard.
On the Solaris side, just use their package manager (I can't help you beyond that). Alan Coopersmith is one of the principal authors of xscope, and he also maintains X11 on Solaris, so it should be there. After that, just check the xscope man page and setup a scope on either side of the ssh tunnel (open 3 terminals on the Mac: one to setup the scope on the mac side, one to use the scoped DISPLAY, ssh over, and create a scope on the other end, and one to ssh over and use the scoped DISPLAY on the other end to run your app).
Good luck,
Jeremy
