I've actually been able to duplicate the crash at will by just loading paraview from the bin directory and then immediately quitting. I'm not sure what VTK does when it closes the OpenGL connection, but hopefully you'll be able to duplicate the crash.
However, here's a datafile you can open to actually see some OpenGL display.
