It does for me. I just ran inkscape from a bash prompt, and it loaded fine.
Where did you get / build Inkscape?
How are you trying to launch it?
What errors are reported?

You are free to do whatever you want... there are plenty of good vector based image packages available for native OSX, and Gimp and Inkscape work well through X11... and I think there are alpha/beta versions of them native as well

The UNIX world will not be ditching X11 any time soon. X11 is very strong. If anything, I'd expect Wayland to be a successor / alternative.

Well, then your limitations are the limiting factor. If you don't want to use the most widely supported open source projects nor pay for commercial software, you're pinning yourself into a corner.
