I maintain X11 on MacPorts, so I am that package manager. MacPorts uses their own X11 libraries. The X11 client applications will run on any X server.

I believe fink still uses /usr/X11 for X11 libraries. Installing XQuartz on SL will not interfere because it installs to /opt/X11 and leaves /usr/X11 alone for the OS. Installing on Leopard replaces /usr/X11. This will affect fink, but it shouldn't cause any problem as the same thing could happen with an Apple Software Update.

Yes, Fink tries to use the system-supplied X11 as far as possible. This is OK on Snow Leopard.

On Leopard, the stock X11 is too buggy to be used, so the advice is to use the Xquartz updates, with one caveat, however:

If you ever intend to update from Leopard to Snow Leopard, then *do not install xquartz-2.4.0 or later*, or you will run into trouble. xquartz-2.3.3.2 is then the recommended version.
